FILIPINO A TOP TEN FINALIST ON CNN’S “HERO OF THE YEAR”

16 OCTOBER 2009 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Twenty eight year-old Filipino Efren Penaflorida, Jr. made it to the top ten finalists of Cable News Network’s (CNN) “Hero of the Year” for championing impoverished children in the Philippines and inspiring them to transform into dynamic and proactive members of the society through education.

Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy C. Gaa lauded Penaflorida’s noble work stating, “Efren has proved that one person, with his determination and selflessness, can touch the lives of many and make a difference in the world.”

Born to a poor family in Cavite City, Penaflorida has been a witness to the growth of teenage gangs in the Philippines, which according to him, can be attributed to poverty.  Feeling a great need to persuade his fellow youth to change and cease their delinquent ways, he and a group of friends in high school established the “Dynamic Teen Company” (DTC) to divert their attention to education.

Today, DTC has grown to a 10,000 member volunteer group teaching basic reading, writing, arithmetic and English every Saturdays to marginalized children in the slums of Cavite City.  Using a roaming “pushcart” filled with books, pens and tables and chairs, they are able to transform places such as cemeteries and dump sites into classrooms.  In a span of 12 years, Penaflorida and his group has changed the lives of over 1,500 children.

Penaflorida’s heroism has caught the attention of an international audience in this year’s “Hero of the Year” contest sponsored by CNN.  Out of a pool of nearly 9,000 applicants, Penaflorida has successfully made it to the top ten finalists.  The winner, which will be chosen through an online public voting, will be awarded with a $100,000.00 cash prize.

“Efren serves as a champion to the marginalized Filipino youth,” Ambassador Gaa emphasized.  “He has gone a long way with his pushcart and we know that he can go even further if chosen as this year’s ‘Hero of the Year.’  It is in this note that I exhort the Filipino community in the United States to aid in furthering Efren’s cause by casting your votes online in support of him.”

Voting period will run until November 19, 2009

World Vision former sponsored child makes it to CNN’s Top 10 heroes

Manila – The recent flooding brought so much havoc in the lives of the Filipinos. But it has also unified the Filipinos to help one another.  Amid the painstaking relief efforts, the announcement of a Filipino’s inclusion to CNN’s Top 10 Heroes brought much needed inspiration to ordinary people who are doing extra ordinary things. Efren Penaflorida, 28, was busy packing and distributing relief items to the affected families of Typhoon Ondoy (international name; Ketsana) in Cavite , when he learned that he made it to CNN’s Top 10 Heroes.  "Instead of joining gangs, we decided to help fellow poor children in our neighborhood through our 4-K system --Kariton na Klassroom (pushcart classroom), Klinika (clinic) at Kanteen (canteen),” Efren shares. Few days before the announcement, Efren and his team were busy collecting donations, re-packing relief goods and distributing these to the flood-affected communities in Cavite . “We have converted our pushcart classroom to a relief cart. This is our way, our contribution, to help the people who are still finding ways to cope up with the damage caused by Typhoon Ondoy,” Efren said, who himself was affected by the flooding. “I, myself was stranded that Saturday in Metro Manila streets for more than 12 hours without food, sleep and energy from continuous walking and braving deep floods. When I got back, our city was not that badly damaged but our neighboring towns were. So, after arriving from Manila on Sunday, I went to church service and soon after gathered my team and collected goods to distribute and it continues until today since school classes are off and we converted our own pushcart school into a pushcart to collect goods,” he added.

Bagumbayan Movement launched, raise P17 Million in contributions.

A national movement composed of more than 30,000 volunteers was officially launched today (April 27) at the historic Manila Hotel on the occasion of the 488th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan, the nation’s first victory against the colonial invaders….Senator Richard Gordon, the keynote speaker… was joined by other guest speakers, to wit: world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr., CNN Hero nominee Efren Penaflorida, Journey band lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, and Chikka.com founder Dennis Mendiola. They were chosen for being ordinary people who went on to do extraordinary things.“Nonito, Efren, Arnel and Dennis are ordinary people who made a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Filipino makes it to 'CNN Top 10 Heroes'

by TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News   Efren Penaflorida first came to the public's consciousness when his group, the Dynamic Teen Company won the Bayaning Pilipino award for their heroic work in helping kids keep off the streets through education in Cavite .  Since 1997, more than 10,000 volunteers have helped educate more than 1,500 kids in depressed areas of Cavite . It was the work of the young helping the young, the poor helping the poor. This year, Penaflorida was recognized as a CNN hero. He was even interviewed by Larry King.  To give the awards justice, CNN enlisted the help of a blue ribbon judging committee to pick the final 10. These men and women are all accomplished in their fields and recognized too for their humanitarian work.  Names like Whoopi Goldberg, retired US General Colin Powell, Sir Elton John, NBA coach Phil Jackson, Ted Turner, and even TV show Hero's star Masi Oka.  All the 10 finalists now will receive US$25,000 or about P1.2 million, and they will be flown to Los Angeles in November for the final All-Star Tribute night.  There, the ultimate hero will be announced and will receive an additional US$100,000.

Garcia: Celebrating a Filipino hero May 20, 2009

Efren Peñaflorida, a 28-year-old teacher from Cavite , who is the first Filipino ever to be nominated for the search for CNN Heroes. Last May 11 to 13, he and Dynamic Teen Company representatives, Emmanuel "Kuya Em" Buluag and Bonn "Kuya Bonn" Manalaysay visited our beautiful city of Baguio and some institutions to share their encouraging message: "You are the change that you dream, and collectively we are the change this world needs." Testifying before students, faculty, and some guests of Small World Christian School Foundation, he recalled being threatened and bullied by gang members as a young boy.    Some of their students were even former gang members and drug addicts who are now living productive lives. He shared that through this he found out the "sweetest revenge" is to become successful and to reach out and help others.    He also firmly believes education and faith in God are powerful weapons in making a difference.

Asia Society honors 10 young leaders
THE Philippines 21 Young Leaders 2009 were recognized last August 28 in Makati City ….They will eventually represent the Philippines in the Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit in November this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, organized annually by Asia Society's New York headquarters….The summit brings together some 200 emerging leaders from across Asia to build relationships, engage in interdisciplinary dialogue and cultural exchange, and develop cooperative responses for addressing shared challenges. "We believe that such interaction with your peers and key industry leaders from various sectors will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop leadership …Efren Peñaflorida is the founder of the Dynamic Teen Company, a Tayo Award-recipient volunteer organization that aims to make a difference in the lives of slum children without access to proper hygiene, education, and other basic rights….DTC's core activity is the K4 Program (Kariton, Klasrum, Klinik at Kantin), a roving informal education/medical mission/feeding program. Efren is one of the CNN Heroes nominees for 2009. The major social issue that Efren tries to address is the proliferation of juvenile delinquency; through DTC, he offers less fortunate children an alternative activity to joining gangs. Some of DTC's former beneficiaries have grown up to become volunteers of the organization.
